MILL HILL UPDATE | Markets and Shops News May

WEEKLY MARKETS
We told you that the trial of the weekly market had come to an end. Vibe Markets are going to look at the results and then hopefully return at a yet to be determined date in the future. Thank you for your great support of the trial.

Mill Hill SUMMER FESTIVAL
The 4th Annual Summer Festival takes place on Friday and Saturday 14/15 June. With the full street Market and Town Sq activities (subject to licence) it promises to be another great success.

LICENCE APPLICATION For TOWN SQUARE
Over the last 4 years the Market and other event organisers have had to apply for individual licences for each event. This is expensive. No objection has ever been made. In addition not one complaint about the events or markets has ever been lodged with the Council etc.
To save money and to enable access to the Sq on an easier basis the Markets and Sq premises manager decided to get a single licence. This saves thousands of pounds in time and fees.
Sadly a small group of local residents based on Brockenhurst Road led by Richard Logue of the Liberal Democrats decided to oppose the move on fictional claims of under age drinking and rubbish. All of which the Markets strongly refute when we contacted them.

We also spoke to Richard Logue on Twitter and asked him why he continually opposed new shops (Domino's) and Markets on the Broadway.  His surprising answer to our offer of supporting him if he wished to do something positive was "bollocks"

We hope Richard will withdraw his complaints on the license because The Police, The Trading Standards, and Council fully support the markets and have seen no evidence of rubbish or disruption caused by any of the events on the Broadway.  The licence is expected to be agreed this month which will mean the Markets can continue, the Summer and Christmas Festivals (lights switch on and Reindeer) and the Channukah lights.  We hope that Richard and his supporters will work with the community to make sure these events are a great success. Edit : Richard has now claimed that the Underage Drinking clause of Protecting Children from Harm regarding what is an alcohol and events license for Town Square events will attract underage drinkers.  The evidence for this is that the bar has been there for 4 years with on average 3 to 6 events per year and not once has anything like that been reported.  If the licence for events is refused it would be a real shame because as things stand over 90% of people want events on the Town Square in the Poll that is running across social media.

Being positive about our shopping street.

NEW SHOPS NEWS
The current situation. The Cooksleys Butchers shop will reopen in June/July as a Upcycling Furniture and Home Centre raising money for Charity.  The Living Room should open this month as a new spa. Signage and refitting is taking place.

We are told by many traders that footfall has fallen again this year though there have been a number of busy weekends. Mainly when the sun has been out and for large Saracens matches.  Your support for them is essential.  Please help.

We also hope that all political parties will stop using the Broadway as a political football because the Traders are angry that the street is being run down by Internet postings on social media of pictures of bins etc. In addition the constant opposition to applications by new incoming traders is putting off people coming to the Broadway to open shops.   This has been going on for years and it needs to stop. We have to welcome all businesses to our street or end up with empty units.

We don't do politics but our council needs to stop political groups undermining the shop licencing process for political gain.  Adding to huge costs of traders and putting up our council tax.

EUROPEAN ELECTIONS
These take place on May 23 to elect people at a cost of £139 million to the European Parliament even though it is unclear whether they will take their place there.  Sums up politics in the UK.  You should have received your polling card. If not contact the Council.

SARACENS
Congrats to the club for winning the European Champions Cup for the third time in four years. An amazing achievement. The women's team and the A Team Storm also both one their championship Trophies. A triple win.  Now the Premier League semi final beckons.

BARNET FC
Congrats on winning the Best Run in FA Cup trophy awarded for this last season. Much deserved and we hope they can push for promotion back to the league next season.

BROADWAY NEWS
The only independent non ad based website in Mill Hill.  This site has run by volunteers since 2010 and has no membership of any local group or committee or political party.  We stand 100% outside as residents/traders.   We are aware of the ridiculous rumours that we are paid to do this site etc.  The rumours about that and about all our writers are totally untrue and we will continue our support and promotion of the area with our unique views which some people hate - we accept that there are people who flamed us over Saracens coming to Mill Hill - over Tescos coming to Mill Hill - over our support for Dominos and Fast Food outlets - over our support for both Independent and Chains on the street ( We need both) The public will choose what they want because if they spend their money then the shops we want will survive.  If we don't spend our money then they will close.  I loved Cooksleys but sadly there were not enough people to support that shop - so it closed.   It was great and obviously with Mill Hill having a large number of vegetarians these days it is unlikely we will ever see a butcher being able to afford the rates and rent etc to come onto High Streets in North London.

Have a wonderful month and see you at the Festival ♥️ 👍 😁
