Both set the tone for a very enjoyable evening. The new piece was warmly received by the audience. Paul then played a piano piece.

A summer song by William Byrd showed off the fine sopranos on top form before a medley "Songs of Springtime" by EJ Moeran brought the first half to a close.

It was heartening to see the rush to the produce and book stalls plus the wine and strawberries during the interval. Mill Hill's people know how to enjoy a summer's day !

The second act began with anther composition by Paul Ayres who set Byrd's choir instructions to a lively set of tunes for a choir showing off different parts of the choir. Great fun.

An Elgar and Stanford summer song were then performed with the choir sounding fantastic in The Blue Bird by Stanford. Another solo on the piano followed - "Here Comes The Sun" - which the audience loved.

As in the first act there was a set of songs to complete the programme. This was a set of Shakespearian Summer Songs set by Shearing. Some are well known songs often played on radio and it was the perfect end to a fantastic concert.

The choir were directed by Tom Winpenny who kept the choir light and summery throughout the evening. Paul Ayres who wrote two of the songs and accompanied with great aplomb on the piano replaced the advertised pianist on the day of the concert. Thank you to him for stepping in to make sure the concert could go ahead.

JOIN THE CHOIR

The London Pro Arte Choir are looking for new members to come and sing. St Michaels Church Mill Hill
LONDON PRO ARTE CHOIR
SATURDAY 19 NOVEMBER
ST MICHAEL'S CHURCH
Philippa Boyle - Soprano
Claire Eadington - Mezzo
Oliver Martin-Smith Tenor
Julian Chou-Lambert -Baritone
Martyn Noble Organ
Orpheus Sinfonia
CONDUCTOR - TOM WINPENNY

It was exciting to see a packed church for this concert. Putting the covid years behind us all ! on a chilly Saturday evening in Mill Hill.

The Choir have to be the hardest working choir in North London because rather than just performing Mozart's famous Requiem they also treated the audience to a performance of the lively Maria Theresa Mass.

The Orchestra and Choir were based at the West End of the Church on tiered seating, with the four professional soloists in front of them. The Haydn mass was a very good first half selection. A baroque masterpiece that had some of the features of the Mozart piece. Such as the four soloists combining throughout to deliver lines from the mass, interspersed with singing from the choir. The mass was warmly received by the audience.

After the interval and a huge scrum for the Produce Stall ( I am pleased to report one of our group managed to buy 3 lovely jams ! ) the Mozart was performed for the first time for about 7 years in Mill Hill.

In my review of that 2015 performance I mentioned how the size of the church made it the perfect place to hear this work. Once again it was marvellous to hear a young orchestra The Orpheus Sinfonia start up the Requiem in our beautiful church. For about 45 minutes the choir and soloists sang their hearts out in this exceptional piece of music. It went so fast. It was like being immersed in a glorious sound wave that the Conductor Tom Winpenny coaxed out of his gathered forces.

It was a fantastic evening, Two major works for the price of one, The Mozart remains one of my favourite pieces and I am already looking forward to hearing the Pro Arte Choir perform it again in the future !

We are so lucky to have live music to this high standard on our doorstep and Father Steven Young introduced the evening with these sentiments. St Michael's is ideal for music and the Choir and their Director continue to strive to give us the best music. The concerts are a major event in the local community's social calendar for all that love live music. If you don't yet attend then make sure you get a ticket for forthcoming events - tickets are always available on the door as well.

Next Concert is the Annual Carols for Choir and Audience on Saturday 10 December at 5p.m in St Michaels Church. Look our for the posters on Social Media with all details and see it below. Please share with friends and invite them along. It is always a joyous celebration of Christmas for everyone.

Advance Notice : Spring Concert is on Saturday 18 March | <span face=""Source Sans Pro", Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #141412;">Rossini – Petite Messe Solennelle

If you wish to join the choir and be part of this fabulous group then go to their website www.lpac.org.uk for more information.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1996930923126778419.post-28285556140637378692022-09-06T12:26:00.001+01:002022-09-06T12:26:17.824+01:00WE ARE BACK FROM OUR SUMMER HOLIDAYS !
The team have returned from their summer holidays refreshed and ready to bring you the latest from Mill Hill Broadway.

We have been writing this blog for 13 years. So this was a very fitting programme on a balmy July evening in North West London.

The first half saw the choir sing anthem no 4 and 8. Starting with no 8. A long piece alternating between soprano and tenor soloists and the choir. The sopranos were on top form for this anthem with sparkling entries and a clear leading line.

The Britannica Sinfonia played the baroque continuo and there were some fine orchestral movements. It is delightful to hear Handel's music from such a fine ensemble.

It was in Anthem 4 that the soloists showed their star quality. First from tenor Samuel Jenkins who made the waves rage wonderfully rather than horribly ! Then the duet between Samuel and Emily Owen was a high point of the evening. The text 'O worship the lord in the beauty of holiness' was simply one of the best Handel duets I have ever heard (and I am a huge Handel fan)

The choir in these anthems have to enter after solos and to their credit they were impressive in maintaining the quality of their singing throughout.

Such was the excellence of Anthem 4 in particular, at the start of the interval, several seated around me around me (obviously attending for the first time ) expressed that this was a rather excellent concert.

The interval saw the fabulous refreshments return after the pandemic. Strawberries and a wide variety of soft drinks and Pimms ! etc. A beautiful church and a great meeting place for many. For this concert there was a free programme with the texts which is very welcome and helpful.

In the second half the anthem 10 was performed. This anthem had much for the choir to sing. The last two movements with first an almost Mozartian layered chorus followed by a final chorus to Amen which was reminiscent of Handel's great concluding choruses in the Messiah. The choir once again gave a very good performance with some very dynamic singing in this particular anthem.

The two soloists provided more top quality singing in Anthem 10 and if you read the image below for their biography you will see that both are World leading choral singers performing solo for ensembles such at the famous Sixteen and many more.

On a Saturday night in sleepy Mill Hill it was once again a great treat to hear such beautiful music in our local church. The Choir under their Musical Director Tom Winpenny continue to impress and the quality of the concerts continues to be excellent. The Chandos Anthems are not the best known of choral repertoire but a sizeable audience enjoyed a lovely night of music and refreshments. Thank you to all involved in the performance and front of house for such a good concert.

The next Concert is the very popular Mozart Requiem in November which drew a sold out audience the last time it was performed. Everyone should get their tickets in advance and nice and early for what promises to be another very exciting evening of choral music. Do invite friends and if you have not ever been then this is an ideal concert to attend ( Under 18s go free - which in these cost of living crisis times is a welcome night out offer )

Choir : Finally the Choir are running a Come and Sing evening on September 15 ( details in the image below ), An ideal opportunity to see if you would like to join the choir. The pandemic has clearly affected recruitment over the last 2 years and so please spread the word to singers or wannabe singers about this excellent choir who rehearse in Mill Hill at Hartley Hall and have been in existence for 70 years.

The website www.lpac.org.uk has information and tickets can be purchased from the site as well for all events.

FUTURE CONCERTS INFORMATION

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1996930923126778419.post-53903110962174411942022-07-02T18:24:00.000+01:002022-07-02T18:24:02.182+01:00NEW OPENINGS IN JUNE | ZAK'S and DERADA
June has seen two new restaurants open on the Broadway.

Zaks is a Moraccan cafe with an authentic menu and locally owned and family run. All reviews are very favourable and it is a must visit for great breakfasts and lunches including specials. Cakes and coffee and Tea are also proving very popular.

Derada is a new Italian restaurant next to Prezzo. Like Zak's it has been packed out in its opening weeks. The menu is a full Italian with all the favourites in a very relaxed cafe style surroundings. Good to have an Italian back on the street.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1996930923126778419.post-51315074017739921942022-05-09T17:00:00.002+01:002022-05-09T17:00:46.762+01:00STEP FREE ACCESS FOR STATION FOR FOR 2024
In 2019 local MP Matthew Offord and Mill Hill Neighbourhood Forum's John Gillett ran a campaign to win funding for step free access for our Thameslink station Mill Hill Broadway.

Today Matthew has announced that it will be coming in 2024. Thank you to Matthew and John for this great result. The two of them also delivered the Mill Hill Town Square along with a Tesco's Community Grant. The victory was a total landslide with only a handful of areas returning a Conservative councillor. Mill Hill was one of these with three Conservative councillors.

The Liberal Democrats lost all their seats and in many cases ended up in fourth place behind the Greens. In Mill Hill they came third but lost nearly half their vote from 2018.

Labour have said that with the closeness of the result in Mill Hill they will target it in 2026 and hope to target the new Political Constituency which is Mill Hill ( we think it is linked to Chipping Barnet )

We hope that the new council brings back services into Barnet - gets rid of Capita - and starts to improve the shabby state of all areas in the Borough. It should be for the good of the area. We support the Preservation Society and have promoted them since 2010 and they now become the major voice in Mill Hill. We encourage you to join them.

Sadly the local Residents Group has morphed into a litter picking organisation rather than campaigning for major change in the area such as the Station redevelopment (step free access) and blocking tower blocks in the village. Both things the Forum was undertaking. Sadly no group now exists for either.

The Forum in its short 5 year life created the Town Square, won step free access for the station multi million investment plus for the Broadway. Got the bins off Broadway, held over 5 festivals a year -which catered for all income groups, renewed the Salcombe Gardens shopping parade, helped stop or amend over 50 housing schemes for the area, brought together groups and helped to develop a local Guide and monthly newspaper meaning sold out events in the area for the first time in 25 years plus.

These huge things were often done by working with the council as well. However, Roger Tichborne and Richard Logue are politically opposed to the Conservative council and do not wish any group to work with them. This led to serious political campaigning against the Forum and against the local area. People wonder why politics has such a bad name. Sadly this proves why.

Many residents are very upset about the lack of a Neighbourhood plan - which was almost ready to publish, and the closure of the Forum's markets on the Broadway and Festivals. These will never return. The cost to establish them was huge and the rewards small because Mill Hill is extremely small. Sorry to all of you.

The Forum has left huge improvements. It will be remembered as a golden age and it's committee members will become historical legends. As for the bitter political types who have undermined many great local initiatives and businesses they will be no doubt ignored at the ballot box for decades to come.

There is no room for abuse or hate in the local area. We urge people to look at social media and unsubscribe from accounts that attack other local groups and people. It's childish and nasty. 99% of the abuse is untrue and concocted from individuals imaginations.

Luckily our private Instagram is going from strength to strength, gaining over 100 new followers every few months. Up to over 1800 now. Please follow to find out the events and offers in Mill Hill Broadway and beyond. We continue to only publish positive news. The 60-0 win over unbeaten Ealing in the first leg was one of the most complete wins ever seen in the history of play off finals anywhere.

Next season the crowds return to Stone X. The new stand is ready to be built improving the facilities at Stone X with Education facilities for Middlesex University. This creates a world class sporting hub between the two biggest organisations in Barnet.

Saracens continue to be the best community organisation in Barnet adding greatly to the area with its foundation and facilities. At present the biggest vaccination centre in Barnet as well.

We will always be proud that we supported them coming to the area from the initial announcement to the latest new stand development. We applaud Barnet Council for making this happen and we hope one of the ends ( or both ) will also have a new stand built to continue the investment into these facilities which will last 100+ years for local people and provide more rooms for local organisations. A capacity of 20k needs to be reached because the shuttles from here on Broadway via Thameslink can easily cope with a capacity up to around that - 15k is the current situation with temporary (and ugly) stands.

Good luck to the management and team next season. Thank you to all the stars for staying after the debacle of relegation. In the end with covid both the Prier League teams and Saracens played to zero crowds - do it made little difference. The media continued to cover Saracens as well.

The new season starts in mid September. The good news is that it has been published in an A5 format. Adverts were £500 per page and it is clear not many were taken in the current financial situation. Featuring a directory of home businesess as well as updating the Associations projects and membership. You should have the print version in your letter box about now.

The Mill Hill Guide is coming out in June but only as an online edition. The online edition has been read by over 20,000 and is fully interactive. To reflect the year the Guide has been funded by the Arc Media Group in 2021 and the £100 full page advertising charge has been waived for all advertising. This makes it the first Directory to be totally free in North London.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1996930923126778419.post-844467578789319492021-04-07T19:14:00.001+01:002021-04-07T19:14:28.509+01:00SKWD POP UP COMES TO BELMONT FARM
The big news this week as we all get ready for April 12th. This brings the total of cases per 100k under 50.

Congratulations to everyone for following the rules and taking the vaccine. It looks likely that by Easter covid will not exist in Barnet. Hopefully, restrictions can then be lifted.

This year is going to be really good.

Read more here COVID CASES

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1996930923126778419.post-71395200464815357672021-03-09T07:51:00.001+00:002021-03-09T07:51:57.452+00:00PROPERTY AVAILABLE ON MILL HILL BROADWAY
We have posted a list of properties including offices and retail on our Instagram account @millhillbroadway if you are interested in bringing your business to Mill Hill.

We can advise you on things like private parking spaces, office sizes, prices, types of use plus we do know most of the landlords personally and can advise on past performance.

The street is very buoyant since lockdown. They state that they only have sold just over 50% of the full page ads and few enhanced adverts. The full page is £500 and enhanced is a simple box as for £49. The aim was to print 10,000 copies post covid to help local businesses. However, it is clear that the finances do not add up.

This follows the long standing annual Official Guide to Mill Hill announcing that they will go online only in 2021 and cut full page ads to £100 with free enhanced listings.

The Mill Hill Guide told us ,:

" We are not surprised that the figures don't add up for a printed brochure. Printing 10k booklets can cost up to £10k and distribution is also a large expense. We got sponsors including Barratt homes last year to pay for the print cost. However, it became clear to us that charging local businesses anything in 2021 would be near impossible due to covid. Therefore, we decided to go online. Our production costs are covered by Arc Media Group, so we have very little outlay. Hence we can charge nothing for all enhanced adverts and offer free adverts to those who advertised in 2020. "

It has taken the Mill Hill Guide 12 years to establish its position as the leading guide to the area. Many have contributed and this year it has a new editor who is the first female editor. So the whole design will be fresher and younger. It also will be more interactive.

We asked the Mill Hill Guide if they will print again.

" If someone comes forward with significant money to do this then we consider it but it needs to be around £6k to £10k to deliver to all households a 48 page full colour brochure that is free. For now we think online is more important and we are putting our efforts and resources into creating an incredibly beautiful online resource for the area"

So it looks as if print guides for the area are over. At least the cost of advertising will now drop hugely.

To contact the Mill Hill Guide email them at info@millhillbroadway.com. Adverts for 2022 will open soon at just £100.

To contact the Residents Association brochure go to their website where there are still adverts at £500 each available in their annual brochure and directory.

You can find both brochures for 2020 on issuu.com

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1996930923126778419.post-89554098781174937712021-03-04T09:44:00.001+00:002021-03-04T09:44:37.277+00:00GAIL'S BAKERY MILL HILL OPENS
The excellent and fashionable Gail's Bakery has opened this morning in Mill Hill 📱

We were there for the opening and have posted images on our Instagram account @millhillbroadway

It may not be cheap but it is exceptional quality. The cinamonn buns are just as good as the hype around them. Friendly staff and spacious.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1996930923126778419.post-20503302617899614632021-03-02T09:44:00.001+00:002021-03-02T09:44:17.491+00:00RETAIL REOPENS APRIL 12

The Roadmap was announced last week by the Government.

All our retail and beauty will reopen on April 12th. This is fantastic news.

Gail's Bakery opens this week in the old Bob's Cafe site joining Gregg's, Wenzels on the street giving more choice and bringing their own style of bakery which as another large chain means the street is now well.served by the major bakery chains.

Our Instagram account goes from strength to strength and now has over 1,500 on the Broadway account and nearly 1400 on the Arts Account. This at nearly 3,000 is the largest community account on Instagram for the area and the most active social media account.

Social media is a nasty place and in particular on Facebook and Twitter. We have large accounts on both but none of them have been active for a couple of years because of the abusive behaviour on those platforms. We made our Broadway account a private account to maintain a safe space on Social Media for the area. It will never be huge because everyone who is allowed to join is vetted as real accounts with no track record of hate posting. That means your postings and information will be safe from the *wild West* postings elsewhere.

This account will reopen on April 12 fully and we can announce that there will be several new and exciting developments for local people this summer in our promotional activities for the area.

Stay safe and let's all look forward to April 12 and restrictions being removed by June 21. It's been a tough year but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
