Since Sainsbury's left the Broadway at the end of the 1980s/early 90s there has not been one of the Big 4 supermarkets on Mill Hill Broadway. Those who moaned about the Tesco arrival seem to forget that the heyday of this street had Sainsbury's as a store. Today adding to the excellent Iceland and Marks and Spencer stores we finally get back one of the big 4 supermarkets onto our shopping street. It has been universally welcomed by shoppers on the street and is the biggest opening since Marks and Spencer in the 1990s.
The store has transformed the double frontage retail space adding on at the rear to create a large store which has taken three months of incredible hard work seven days a week and sometimes through the night to bring this stunning store to completion.
At 10a.m a large queue had already built up and the street was buzzing with anticipation. We watched this from our studios opposite on Broadway.
A steady stream of shoppers have made their way in all morning and we decided to go after the first few hours in the hope it would have become quieter.
When you enter you have Fresh Fruit in front of you including Bananas and Apples. To the right you have a huge selection of takeaway wraps / sandwiches / drinks of every type and description - this is what has made Tesco Express such a massive success in central London. Note that the prices in OUR Tesco Express seem to be cheaper all round.
As you proceed down the first aisle you see to your left fresh fruit and vegetables - an excellent selection including many that will be useful for home cooking. Ahead are some large fridges and these have quiches and pies in them - including the Finest range and some of the independent Pie makers which are quality items.
In the newly built rear section are World Foods and the Finest Ready Meal range. At the front are a large range of coffees including ILLY, TAYLORS and the Massimo range. Instant coffees include special offers on Carte Noire and the full Kenco range. It really is the best selection of coffees in the area.
To the side there are soft drinks and a special bottled water section including Highland Spring - Peroni - and Tesco's own excellent value sparkling waters. Again this is the best selection in the area.
The nuts and snacks section is opposite and offers excellent value and is cheaper than the wholefood section at the front of the store which offers various nuts and other options. Again this is the largest selection of nuts and wholefoods in the area.
The two other main aisles in the store are as follows : The central aisle has a Bakery section at the front : special offers about including 5 donuts for £1 and various pastries which are not available anywhere else on Broadway and are much loved by Italian coffee drinkers !
The last aisle leading to the Checkout section is mainly Wine and Spirits on one side and the usual freezer sections with you would find in a normal Tescos with a massive range.
There are also sections for household, a large pharmacy section to the rear, a yoghurts and deserts section. Biscuit eaters are well catered for. It really covers almost everything.
The range and prices are very competitive and surely shoppers will leave supermarkets like Sainsbury's in Edgware and Asda in Colindale to come BACK to the Broadway for basic food shopping at reasonable prices.
The Checkout Process
There are ultra modern and fast checkouts. There are three staffed and three self service checkouts. This means that getting in and out is fast even with the big crowds we encountered. Behind the counters are the usual tobacco and top end spirits. The lottery I believe is also available and you would come here to use Tesco Direct for collection.
A fantastic and welcoming store in the heart of the Broadway. Ultra modern in design and providing a range of goods which is bound to appeal to families - individuals - and with a good balance for all budgets. Top quality food is available alongside staples and regular family buys. It really has everything and Tesco have done their homework on what the people of Mill Hill want in a store. It deserves to be a massive success. If you live local then encourage your friends to come down and shop on the Broadway and take a look - and if possible lets try and get Mill Hill residents using the Broadway as their main shopping again. Tesco Express at last provides a fully stocked supermarket with the most competitive pricing in the food retailing business.
