The work started in earnest last week to convert the large unit in the middle of the Broadway to a new Tesco store.
Long term residents will remember that before the Sports Shop moved in the original department store lay empty for several years, attracting bill stickers and with homeless sleeping in the central doorway area. A short lived Christmas Pound shop was all that happened and the store was an eyesore and a blight on the Broadway for many years.
Although Tesco is not the store of choice for most people in Mill Hill - yes we all prefer Waitrose and M&S with top ups from Lidl and Iceland for store cupboard essentials - it should liven up the far end of the Broadway in the way only a Top 4 supermarket can. It is therefore to be welcomed. Any business that takes on such a large unit needs to be profitable and viable.
There are still a few units on the Broadway which may be available - so we can't get too choosy with the retail stores we are getting - and having lived here over 3 decades (in which time we have had other supermarkets like Sainsbury's on the street) we have have seen many stores come and go. We used to have some lovely art shops and a record store which are all missed, but shopping is now mainly for essentials and specialist due to the internet.
Therefore, I do not think a petition against Tesco (63 people) was a very good idea and this may give the wrong impression about the majority of Mill Hillians (the other 25,000+) who are brilliant, supportive and friendly of all entrepreneurial attempts. We will be whether it comes or an Estate Agent arrives on the Broadway.
So Broadway Blog says a BIG MILL HILL WELCOME to our latest store and we will bring you the Opening Information and offers as soon as we get them and confirm who is opening on the Broadway and when.
Let's make CHRISTMAS 2015 the best shopping event in the History of the Broadway and the French Market has given us an excellent start this year.
