Christmas 2010

Well it is the end of October. A damp and dark month generally with just a few days of lovely sunshine.

We are looking forward to a fantastic Christmas on Mill Hill Broadway and will start November with our coverage of things to do and go to for Christmas in the area.

Thank you to the many hundreds who visit this blog each week. Each month sees more people visiting as the word spread. Please contribute.

We have put several local blogs to the left of the news - these all have different perspectives on the locality. From politics to re-development to just personal news and businesses. Please check them out and by doing so we can create a local community here on the net for Barnet and Mill Hill.

Enjoy your Sunday and remember the THREE HAMMERS has a new menu just started and special Sunday offers. Check them out at the link on the right of this news.

ADAM AND EVE PUB ANNOUNCE OPENING DATE

December 1st the famous and historic ADAM AND EVE pub finally opens its doors after a massive rebuilding and new "local" owners taking it over.

A party will be held on December 11th to celebrate the opening.

So get your diaries out and make sure you attend on DECEMBER 1st to get this new venture underway with a big bang.

With these sorts of pubs closing every day in the UK it is important that we support the locally run pub FIRST before the chains. Though every facility in our locality should be supported because otherwise we will lose them.

It would be fantastic to see local people boycotting the West End and other places and pledging that 2011 will be a year where they will ONLY spend their money locally at local shops and local restaurants and pubs.

By doing this we can ensure that our area does not suffer the long term ravages of the recession. Obviously if a service or item is not offered locally then that cant be done - but we have some of the finest restaurants and pubs and shops in the South East. Therefore for most things we can stay LOCAL.

The ADAM AND EVE is worthy of our support. See you there on December 1st.

Reminder : Sign Libraries Petition this week please

The aim of the petition is to get at least 2,000 signatures and if 4,000 can sign then there can be a debate on the issue at Barnet Council/

Therefore please let everyone know that they need to sign this. There is a link at the top of the right hand side of this blog - just cut and paste. It take only a couple of minutes to do.

We need our library here in Mill Hill just off the Broadway. If we dont stand up and say this then it will be taken away because Barnet Council like all others have to cut 25% of their expenditure. The library is vital for all age groups and all income brackets. It is therefore good for everyone.

Please take a few minutes today and sign and send the link to your friends on your FACEBOOK and TWITTER or Mailing List.

One Week on and we get Winter !

What a difference a week makes. I go away in Sunshine and return to almost sub zero temps here in Mill Hill.

So what have we got to look forward to this Autumn and Winter ?

Great strong red wines from MILL HILL WINES to eat with stews or maybe the excellent Lamb Shanks from ICELAND ( 2 for £5.50 from the fresh meat section at the back ) and the BUTCHER On the Broadway is doing diced beef for stews which is superb or chicken for around £6.99 per KG.

The Churches are getting ready for Advent and Christmas Services which we will post on here as soon as we know them - make sure you get to one and sing some carols. It is good for the soul !!!

It terms of shopping it is worth checking out the autumn and winter collections in the clothes shops. The Charity Shops are full of good quality second hand stuff at the moment and are very busy I have been told by the Oxfam manager.

The street cafes are suprisingly busy because most of them have heaters ! so you can still sit out but make sure you wrap up well.

The Broadway is quiet this morning but I am sure as the day goes on it will get busier

Summer Back for One Day

Glorious weather today in Mill Hill and the Broadway is buzzing. No better place in London on a sunny Sunday to go out and enjoy the fantastic street cafe culture and wonderful restaurants which are on the Broadway.

Have a wonderful Sunday and let us recommend the BLOG about Sacred Heart Church's big event that took place last night on the area's leading Blog BARNET EYE. A wonderful report about a huge and meaningful local event.

LOGO The "Aladdin's Cave" of the Broadway

LOGO has been open on the Broadway for very many years. We suggest you go in and ask the owner exactly how long ! During that time it has become one of the favourite shops for most locals. The every changing stock of exclusive handbags - clothing - and other accessories are always lovely to look at in the window and if there is one shop to visit for such things this year before Christmas then LOGO has to be that shop.

LOGO proves that originality, quality and good pricing will lead to a successful business on the Broadway and it is worth a visit to The Broadway to visit this shop alone.

If you have not been in for a browse then we would say you really are missing out.

More on MILL HILL X FACTOR HOUSE

The Daily Mail has more photos and lots more about the X FACTOR house here in Mill Hill ( see our previous blog with maps etc )

It seems that already some papers are running stories about teenagers trying to get into the grounds ( Daily Express ) ! Things can only get busier as the series progresses and half term at the end of October is bound to see huge crowds in Mill Hill to try and get autographs.

Exciting times !

One other blogger that we follow here at Broadway Blog ( Ainelivia ) has already pointed out the long distance from the Broadway station to the house - but I wonder if that will put off the fans ? They will certainly be getting fit if they try to walk it - but perhaps the Taxi Services next to the Station will see loads of extra business in the coming months ! We will keep everyone posted and try and take some photos of the chaos at half term !

CROWDS GATHER TO SIGN PETITION TODAY ON BROADWAY

The SAVE BARNET LIBRARIES PETITION stall on Mill Hill Broadway was very busy this morning as many people q'd to sign the petition - including Broadway Blog. We expressed our concern to Roger from the Barnet Eye and have promised his campaign full support.

The Mill Hill Library is our best local asset - it is a wonderful oasis of calm and information just off the Broadway. Many people use it daily and others weekly. To lose such an important social meeting place and resource would be a disaster for local people.

It is fantastic to see so many people expressing their concern about this subject and we hope the Council will announce that Mill Hill Library and the other libraries in Barnet are safe from the cuts. It would be better to cut a councillor and their allowances than to lose one library. We know which provides better value for our tax money :-) ( Photo of Barnet Eye Roger on Broadway today )
