Business Review : Mill Hill Wines

We have mentioned Mill Hill Wines several times because this shop is a gem. Probably the best independent wine retailer in London and we are lucky to have it in Mill Hill. Forget supermarkets and warehouses - it is worth going to this shop and they will listen to what you "like" and your "budget" and always come up trumps with something excellent. Website HERE

This is them in their own words

"We opened the shop in 1983 and we have been trading under the same management ever since. We are one of the few independent Wine Merchants left in London. All our staff have had many years in the Wine Trade and are able to offer expert purchasing advice across the whole range of wines and spirits.
We pride ourselves in finding new wines and setting trends, an example of this is that we were the first retailer to stock the now iconic Cloudy Bay. We constantly find and stock the wines that will be written about tomorrow.
We carry a large range of old and new world wines we have an exciting selection of wines from new world estates. We import directly from producers enabling us to offer exceptional value. We carry a large range of claret and burgundy ready for drinking now or laying down, and have one of the most interesting range of Spanish and Italian wines in London.
We have a wine club, which you can join through their website or in the shop.. This will give you details of tastings and any new and interesting wines that we have found. We will also e-mail members with offers on wine in short supply as they become available.
We have been trading for more than thirty years, we are always on the lookout for new and interesting wines so please enquire if you are looking for a specific wine that is difficult to obtain.

THEATRE CLUB open to Mill Hill Residents

A new social Theatre Club has been set up in Hendon and is open for Mill Hill residents to get involved.

The club will run coach trips from the Borough to the West End. This means safe and comfy travel to the door of the theatre and probably group rate prices which are often very low compared to the cost of booking individually.

It is being hoped that it will become a regular social event and sounds just the sort of idea for building more community.

MILL HILL's Pro Arte Choir Concerts Announced

The superb local choir based at St Michal's Flower Lane have announced their schedule for before Christmas.

On 2 November they are giving a free concert of the sensational DURUFLE Requiem in Paddington. This is a great chance to experience a wonderful piece of music in a lovely church with no cost.

On 4 December they return to Mill Hill St Michael's with a season offering SOUNDS ANGELIC and tickets are on sale for just £10 and £12 with all profits going to the very worthy Mill HIll Good Neighbours Scheme. So a great concert and support for the old and vulnerable in our area - so why not get your ticket in advance and support this fantastic concert and bring all your friends.

The only way an area becomes a community is by people meeting together and supporting each other. The PRO ARTE choir are a wonderful example of this - and so we urge you to get involved.

WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL for the POPE and Mill Hill

The extremely exciting and successful visit by Pope Benedict to the UK this morning moves to WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL for a Mass at 10a.m. Watch live HERE

Cardinal Herbert Vaughn who is buried in Mill Hill supervised the building of Westminster Cathedral as Archbishop at that time and a Chantry bearing his name and statue is off the North Transept in the cathedral which is well worth a visit if you have not been.

Mill Hill has a rich Catholic tradition with the largest Church on the Broadway being the Sacred Heart Catholic Church which is always busy and is an important meeting place in Mill Hill.

Mill Hill's churches and Jewish community appreciate that Mill Hill is an area of true religious freedom and work together regularly.

Our religious houses in Mill Hill are part of our communities identity and glue for us who live and work in the area.

Today when the Pope celebrates Mass it is good to know that Westminster Cathedral has a direct link to Mill Hill.

Anyone else who knows more about Cardinal Vaughn please post and let us know.

Tonight many pilgrims from Mill Hill will be at Hyde Park for the vigil with the Pope.

AUTUMN on Mill Hill Broadway

Welcome to the first post of Autumn. Apologies for the lack of daily news since we have been putting together our Directory. We do have some new shops that have opened on the Broadway and a couple of new reviews to post which we will do when we get back to daily news next week after posting the initial Directory information.

The sun is still shining and the pavement cafes have continued to be busy despite the fall in temperatures with several having heating installed in the last 12 months.

Over the next few months we intend to complete our Directory into a really good guide to shopping first on the Broadway and then for Hale Lane and the Park and Village areas.

In addition we will be having a CHRISTMAS DIRECTORY where we will put loads of information about extended opening hours - Christmas Church Services - Turkey and food ordering from local suppliers etc. as well as our idea to brighten up the area for Christmas.
